There are several houses to choose from. Pick the one that best suits your needs.

All of these plans have been checked and approved by the North American Bluebird Society.

--Note: When choosing wood for boxes, it is important to use a wood that will weather well. Cedar, redwood, etc are some examples. Avoid treated lumber. It is not advised that you paint or stain your boxes. The birds will be more likely to use them if they are left as natural wood. Check the box holes for rough edges that could damage the bird's feathers.

The common Eastern & Western Bluebird house.

This is a very common design that is probably the best choice for beginners. It is a house for Eastern & Western Bluebirds.

When designing the front of this box it is wise to only fasten the front piece with two nails placed at the top of this piece. the bottom of the piece should be latched down in an reliable manner. In the picture, the bottom of the front plate was latched with a bent nail fitted through a notch. This way, the nail can be turned to latch an unlatch the front. Also, drill three holes under the roof's overhang on the sides of the box for air circulation and put four small holes in the floor for drainage. There is a 1/4 inch gap between the top of the front piece and the box roof.

Peterson Nest Box

This box is more difficult and is better for more advanced builders.

When designing the front of this box it is wise to only fasten the front piece with two nails placed at the bottom of this piece. Then, fasten the top of the piece with one removable nail on one side. Leave a gap between the top of the front piece and the inner roof. Be sure to leave a gap between the front piece and the inner roof. Drill two 3/4" holes in each of the side pieces for ventalation as shown.

Western and Mountain bluebird house

This is another box idea specialized for the mountain and western bluebirds.

If you live in an area that recieves 100+ degree temperatures, you may want to notch out a 1/2" X 7 1/4" vent slot at the top of the front piece on this house to help with the heat issue.
